2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 6 Cyl with engine code P0442

Question

While getting fuel the other day i drove off and left my gas cap hanging open. I got down the road and got a message on my screen to check gas cap . I pulled over and put the cap on and re set the message board. would that cause a P0442 to show up on diagnostic check ?

The fact that you left the gas cap off will cause this code. The code is basically for an evap leak, which the car has when the fuel cap is off. If the car did a self test while the cap was off, the code will appear. You should be able to clear the code and not have any more issues.
