I have a 2002 Toyota Rave4 4dr/4WD which has been running great until 2 weeks ago when the oil light went on and the car stalled out. (The engine light has been on for about a year. It has been checked by the dealer twice during this past year.) I towed it to the dealer who ran a diagnostic and came up with the following codes: P1349 VVT system Malfunction Bank 1, and P1135 Bank 1 Sensor 1.

I was told that the mechanic pulled the oil pan and found the bottom of the pan and pick up covered in metal shavings. They told me I should replace the engine at a cost of $4,000 to $5,000. They cleaned out the pan and changed the oil and the car ran again. I told them I would have to think about the engine replacement as I don't have the funds for this expensive repair. Thankfully the car is still running, the oil light is not on, but the engine light is still on. My question is should I start saving for a new engine? TIA

I suggest getting a second opinion or you should try using a different weight of oil. Do you know what engine oil weight they used?

I don't know what oil the dealer used, but my husband changes the oil for me and he used10-40 in the winter and uses 5-30 in the summer. Thanks for your help.
