I have camry 1999 4 cylinder 2.2, and my timing belt was damaged yesterday on the highway.
And, i towed it to the nearest service center, and the guy says that I need to replace the whole motor which is too expensive. But I found out that timing belt collapse does not affect valves, so I dont need to replace the whole motor. I talked with other mechanics, and they say that I only need to replace timing belt, water pump, and so on, not the whole motor. I think that guy wants to overcharge me! ANyway, I am confused could you help me out what do I really need?

Thank you Reynaldo, you always answer to my questions!

It's not an interference engine, the valves are not impacted when the belt goes. The water pump and tensioner should be replaced at this time as well and check the condition of the belt sprockets. Gates makes the jobber kit with belt, tensioner & water pump with gaskets. Now also is a good time to service the serpentine belt and pulleys.
