code is for an open circuit in the electric thermostat heater. It takes about two days to drain the battery if not cranked. The check engine soon light does not come on. When I clear the code with car running and check again it picks up the same code again. I know changing the thermostat will likely fix the code problem but could it also fix the battery drain?

Replacing the thermostat, is the first step and also looking for coolant leak,What the thermostat heater does is warms up the engine quicker so the engine can go into closed loop faster. As for the battery drain, This has  plaqued BMW for quit some time,It can be related to a  fualty control module.
