I have a 2007 Xterra with no problems until this week. I started it and the engine began running then went dead after about 15 seconds. The service engine and traction control lights came on and they will not go off. After that it has been very difficult to start. The engine turns over rapidly but will not always start. It will start after several attempts and runs fine after being started. It was computer diagnosed by two repair shops as a bad crankshaft position sensor using 3 different computers. The problems still exist after the repair shop replaced the sensor. The mechanics are still trying to find the problem but they are baffled. What could be the problem?

If the problem was diagnose as crank sensor , you may have a skewed crank position sensor, The CKP is a Hall effect meaning it generates  a 5 volt square wave, The ground voltage for the CKP needs to be measure, The CKP 1 * degree frequency needs to be measured, at 2500 RPM the spec is 7.5. If this check out, the ECM is suspected.
