I am getting P1618 and p0705. any help?

2000 volvo s40 with 157000 miles,  two codes, p1618 and p0705.  Check engine light and blinking trany arrow on dash come on.  Trany goes to limp mode and you can turn off the car and restart, car will run fine.  Clear code you may run 2 to 4 hundred miles with no code.  Any help?

I was unable to locate code P1618 for this model.

The P0705 code is for the transmission range sensor. This is mounted to the transmission under the shift linkage. When they begin to fail you will have these symptoms until the component fails completely. When that happens it's likely the car won't start.
