My 04 Infiniti G35 sedan always triggers a TPMS when all tire pressures are at spec. (30psi) or greater. The full size spair in the trunk is set at 40psi. My understanding is that the TPMS will trigger if it goes below the 30psi. All wheels have sensors and the spare is now being used on the car, and the other tire is now in the trunk.

I thought that if OBDII leaves a fault code, that would be another way to troubleshoot the problem.

Only four TPMS wheel sensor can be reprogram to the system. If you change one of the wheels and use a different sensor, you have to transfer the sensor from the old wheel to the new wheel, even if the new wheel is the full spare tire.

If you use a new sensor, then you have to reprogram the new sensor to the TPMS system.
