Code P0848 GMC Description

The transmission fluid pressure switch, also known as the pressure switch manifold, is a multiple switch assembly made up of 3 normally open pressure switches and 1 normally closed pressure switch. Pressure switch 1 monitors shift valve 1 positioning, pressure switch 2 monitors shift valve 2 positioning, pressure switch 3 monitors shift valve 3 positioning, and pressure switch 4 monitors the position of the manual selector valve. The TCM provides a signal circuit to each of the pressure switches. The TCM constantly monitors the circuits to determine the position of the shift valves. The position of shift valves 1, 2, and 3 is controlled by 3 normally closed shift solenoids. When energized, shift solenoid 1 directs fluid pressure to shift valve 1, shift solenoid 2 directs fluid pressure to shift valve 2, and shift solenoid 3 directs fluid pressure to shift valve 3, which strokes the shift valves. When a shift valve is stroked, an exhaust passage is blocked and fluid pressure increases, closing the normally open pressure switch. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM detects that transmission fluid pressure switch 2 signal circuit is High when shift solenoid 2  is commanded ON for 1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0848 GMC Code

What does the OBDII code P0848 mean on a GMC vehicle?

Code P0848 indicates a high voltage issue in the transmission fluid pressure switch 2 circuit, which monitors the hydraulic pressure inside the transmission.

What are common symptoms of code P0848 in a GMC?

Symptoms may include erratic shifting, transmission slipping, delayed gear engagement, reduced fuel efficiency, or the transmission going into limp mode.

What causes the P0848 code on GMC vehicles?

Common causes include a faulty transmission fluid pressure sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, low transmission fluid levels, or internal transmission issues.

Can driving with a P0848 code damage my GMC's transmission?

Yes, if left unresolved, this code can lead to poor transmission performance and potentially cause further damage to internal components.

How do I diagnose the P0848 code on my GMC?

Start by checking the transmission fluid level and condition, inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, and testing the transmission fluid pressure sensor.

What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P0848 code on a GMC?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for electrical testing, and potentially a transmission pressure gauge for further diagnosis.

How do you fix a P0848 code on a GMC vehicle?

Repairs may involve replacing the transmission fluid pressure sensor, repairing damaged wiring, cleaning connectors, or addressing internal transmission problems.

Will clearing the P0848 code solve the issue permanently?

Clearing the code may temporarily remove the warning, but the underlying problem must be fixed to prevent the code from returning.

Could low transmission fluid cause the P0848 code on a GMC?

Yes, low or contaminated transmission fluid can affect pressure readings and trigger this code.

How much does it typically cost to repair a P0848 code on a GMC?

Repair costs vary depending on the issue but may range from $150 to $500 for sensor replacement or wiring repairs. More extensive transmission repairs could cost significantly more.
