Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV)
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system in a vehicle is responsible for evacuating harmful crankcase vapors. It works by allowing fresh air from the air filter housing to enter the crankcase, where it mixes with blow-by gases (combustion gases that leak past the piston rings) before being passed through the PCV valve and into the intake manifold. From there, this mixture is directed into the combustion chamber and burned off.
The PCV valve plays a crucial role in controlling the flow of blow-by vapors. At idle, when there is high manifold vacuum, the PCV valve restricts the flow to maintain a smooth idle. In cases where there is an excessive amount of blow-by gases due to issues like worn cylinders or rings, the system is designed to allow these excess gases to flow back through the crankcase vent hose into the air inlet.
When the engine is not running, the PCV valve remains closed due to spring pressure. This prevents hydrocarbon fumes from accumulating in the intake manifold, which could lead to hard starting. During engine operation, as manifold vacuum decreases with increased engine load, the spring pressure gradually overpowers the vacuum strength, allowing the PCV valve to open in proportion to the engine load and evacuation requirements. In the event of an engine backfire, the PCV valve closes to prevent ignition of fumes in the crankcase.
