Code P2096 Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content of the exhaust stream. When the engine is started, the Engine Control Module (ECM) operates in an open-loop mode, ignoring the HO2S signal voltage while calculating the air to fuel ratio. The ECM supplies the HO2S with a reference or bias voltage of about 450 mV. While the engine runs, the HO2S heats up and begins to generate a voltage within a range of 0-1 000 mV. This voltage will fluctuate above and below the bias voltage. Once sufficient HO2S voltage fluctuation is observed by the ECM, closed-loop is entered. The ECM uses the HO2S voltage to determine the air to fuel ratio. An HO2S voltage that increases above bias voltage toward 1 000 mV indicates a rich fuel mixture. An HO2S voltage that decreases below bias voltage toward 0 mV indicates a lean fuel mixture.

  • I don't know what the code mean. Car/Engine runs perfect. Did not replace any parts concerning this code.

  • What is your make, model and year of your vehicle?

  • Hello, Boogenz here!

  • Have not replaced any parts , started dieing at idle then check engine light came on. Scanned and code p2096 came up it a 07 dodge Durango 4.7

  • Are there any driveability problems? If no driveability problems are present, you could start by clearing the code. If the code comes back you may have to replace the rear (Downstream) Oxygen Sensor.

  • thanks
u mean I need to replace both oxgyen sensors?

  • You may have to replace both sensors, but you should start by replacing the rear sensor.

  • I will, many thanks 4 your advice

  • Just recently hot the catalytic converter replaced. This code became present in my 2008 Saturn astra 3dr Xr

  • Check the sensor. Sensor could have got damage during the installation.

  • I have the same code. 2007 kia rio. Cleared it but it keeps coming back. No major driveability issues , just poor fuel economy and poor acceleration. What can I do about it?

  • Since you also have the bad fuel economy and bad acceleration, I recommend starting by inspecting the catalytic converter. Make sure the catalytic converter is not coming apart. If the catalytic converter is OK, then the next step is to check for intake leaks. I no leaks are preset you have to replace the Oxygen sensor to repair the problem.

  • Thank you. I have 2 cat converters, one just after the manifold on the engine and another under the car. Which one is this code directly pointing to in the case of bank 1?

  • The one after manifold

  • Thank you

  • Just checked with a scanner and from the I/M monitors, all the O2 sensors appear ok but only the catalyst appears incomplete. I believe this means the cat converter is definitely the problem.

  • hi, i have this code on a 2003 mini cooper, 02s are good no leak on exhaust or evap. code is driving me crazy dont know what to do, fuel is bad 22 mpg

  • How do you know the O2 sensor are good? Sounds like the O2 sensor may be reading the exhaust gas as too lean and increasing the fuel ratio, which will explain the low MPG.

  • changed the downstream and tested the upstream with a multi-miter, Short Term and Long Term Fuel Trims are reading ok, short tr between +3to-3.1 long term between 11.2 to 10.2

  • I got this code on a 2005 Hyundai accent.
The flex pipe coming out of the Catalytic Converter got rusted through and was leaking exhaust.
There is an O2 sensor just behind the leak so it was making the code appear.

  • Thank you for the information!!

  • Hi! I Had this code on a Ford Escape 2011 XLT 2.5L, this code appear after replace a broken Evap Canister Valve (CX-2349 part) for the "check fuel fill inlet" message. Any advise? my catalyst can be dead?

Thanks a lot for the comments

  • I got this on a 2016 Honda Civic, found out there was a little humidity in the fuel tank because it was 85% humid and 80 degrees out.

  • Thank you for the information!!
