Code P0021 Infiniti Description

This mechanism hydraulically controls cam phases continuously with the fixed operating angle of the intake valve. The Engine Control Module (ECM) receives signals such as crankshaft position, camshaft position, engine speed, and engine coolant temperature. Then, the ECM sends ON/OFF pulse duty signals to the intake valve timing control solenoid valve depending on driving status. This makes it possible to control the shut/open timing of the intake valve to increase engine torque in low/mid speed range and output in the high-speed range.
The intake valve timing control solenoid valve changes the oil amount and direction of flow through the intake valve timing control unit or stops oil flow. The longer pulse width advances the valve angle. The shorter pulse width retards the valve angle. When ON and OFF pulse widths become equal, the solenoid valve stops oil pressure flow to fix the intake valve angle at the control position.

Discuss the causes and fixes for P0021 Infiniti OBDII Code

  • I got the p0021 code on my 2005 G35X. It turned out to be the cam position sensor. It was $70 and not hard to replace. The sensor is located on the back of the engine on the drivers side for the P0021 code, for P0011 it is the passengers side. It is easier to take off the air intake than it is to reach around behind the engine from the passenger side, although I have done it both ways. The symptoms were only the code, the car would not pass emissions.

  • I changed my bank1and bank 2in my g35 2003 with codes 0035,0011,0021 and it still giving me problems. It actually starts up in on try but while driving it's giving me the same stalls. What else would be the problem?? Tommy

  • You only wrote that you change Bank 1 and Bank 2, but what part exactly? Valves or solenoids? have you change the engine oil lately?

  • Hello I have an 2005 Infinity G35 and it started to have the Check Engine Soon light that came on, I have a cheaper scan tool and it stated P0025 Camshaft Postion Sensor Bank 2 Malfunction, So I replaced the Cam Sensor at the back of the Engine block. Ran the car for awhile and thought everything was great, then it threw the P0021 code by itself no other codes and this time it stated Cam position actuator Bank 2 over advanced I cleared the code and the code returns. Is it the VVT solenoid Valve possibly. I pulled the Solenoid and looked it over pretty good and it seemed to my eyes not to be clogged with bad Oil deposits. The oil is fresh and a new filter as well. Anyone have any thoughts? Ever since this code is present it is very, very tough to start the car, it will eventually start after about 6 or 7 15 second cranks of the key. After it starts the engine runs fine, no rough idle or anything, it has plenty or get up and go still. Any Thoughts?

  • More than likely the problem is the Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve. I have remove may valves and I have never been able to see the carbon built up and sometimes is the electrical part that fails.

  • I ordered the solenoid valve and should have it next week. I was able to apply power to the valve and it does move, im just not sure if the movement is enough as this is my first attempt at this issue. Can you tell me if the movement should be greater than an eighth of an inch? It appears that with rhe key on the valve pushes outward and returns inward with no power applied. Im just trying to understand this problem, thank you for the responce.

  • Started with p0021 then a couple days later p0011 as well. Has crappy power and acceleration. Changed the oil, still crappy power. Would the power and accel loss be due to limp mode. Is that common with these codes and the timing. Can you clean the solenoids. Its has had poor power and accel since i got it just wasnt as bad until the codes showed up.

  • Hello Kevin. What model and year is your Infiniti? Have you tried clearing the codes? how long it takes to comeback?
