The "Evaporative Emission Control System" (EVAP) is designed to prevent the release of fuel vapors into the atmosphere. Fuel in the vehicle's gas tank can produce vapors, especially when the vehicle is parked or the engine is not running. These vapors could contribute to air pollution and the formation of smog.

The EVAP system includes various components, such as the gas tank, charcoal canister, purge valve, and various hoses. When the vehicle is running, the EVAP system purges the stored fuel vapors from the charcoal canister and routes them to the engine for combustion. This process prevents the vapors from escaping into the atmosphere.

To ensure the EVAP system's proper functioning, the vehicle's onboard computer (ECM or PCM) performs self-tests or leak checks on the system. "Check Engine" light illumination: When an issue is detected in the EVAP system, the ECM will store a trouble code and illuminate the "Check Engine" light.

Fuel odor: An EVAP system leak may result in a noticeable fuel odor around the vehicle.

Failed emissions test: A malfunctioning EVAP system can cause the vehicle to fail emissions testing.

When diagnosing an EVAP system issue, consider the following steps:

Retrieve trouble codes: Use an OBD-II scanner to check for any relevant trouble codes related to the EVAP system.

Inspect the gas cap: A loose, damaged, or improperly sealed gas cap is a common cause of EVAP system trouble codes. Ensure the gas cap is tightened properly, and consider replacing it if it shows signs of damage or wear.

Check EVAP system hoses: Inspect all EVAP system hoses and connectors for signs of damage, leaks, or disconnection.

Test the purge valve: The purge valve controls the flow of fuel vapors from the charcoal canister to the engine. It can be tested using a scan tool to check for proper operation.

Perform a smoke test: A smoke test is an effective way to locate EVAP system leaks. Smoke is introduced into the system, and any visible leaks can be identified.

If an EVAP system leak is detected, it's essential to repair or replace the faulty components. This may involve replacing damaged hoses, the gas cap, or a malfunctioning purge valve. In some cases, additional diagnosis and testing may be needed to pinpoint the exact location of the leak.
