To determine if the OBDII (On-Board Diagnostics II) system in your vehicle is working correctly, you can perform a few simple checks and tests. The OBDII system continuously monitors various aspects of your vehicle's performance and emissions, and if there is a problem, it will trigger the Check Engine Light or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). Here's how you can check if the OBDII system is functioning properly:

Check the Check Engine Light (MIL): When you turn on the ignition, all the dashboard lights should illuminate briefly, including the Check Engine Light. This is a bulb check to verify that the light is functioning. Afterward, the Check Engine Light should turn off if the OBDII system detects no issues. If the light doesn't illuminate during the bulb check or remains illuminated while driving, it may indicate a problem with the OBDII system or a detected fault.

Monitor the Check Engine Light: While driving, pay attention to the Check Engine Light. If it remains off under normal driving conditions, it indicates that the OBDII system is not detecting any significant problems with the vehicle's emissions or performance.

Check for OBDII Port Access: The OBDII port is typically located under the dashboard, near the steering column. Check that the port is accessible and not obstructed. You can visually inspect the port to ensure that the pins and connectors are in good condition.

Use an OBDII Scanner: One of the most effective ways to check the OBDII system's functionality is by using an OBDII scanner or code reader. These devices can be plugged into the OBDII port to communicate with the vehicle's onboard computer. When connected, the scanner can retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) that provide information about any detected issues. If the scanner can communicate with the vehicle's computer and retrieve codes, it indicates that the OBDII system is operational.

Verify Readiness Monitors: Some OBDII scanners can also check the status of the readiness monitors. Readiness monitors are self-tests that the OBDII system performs on various vehicle systems. A fully functional OBDII system should have all the readiness monitors in a "ready" state, indicating that the system has completed its self-tests.

If you suspect that your OBDII system is not working correctly or if the Check Engine Light is illuminated, it's crucial to have the vehicle diagnosed by a qualified mechanic or at an authorized service center.
