Code U184C Description

The serial data circuit is the means by which the devices in the vehicle communicate with each other. Once the scan tool is connected to the serial data circuit through the Data Link Connector (DLC), the scan tool can be used to monitor each device for diagnostic purposes and to check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). When the vehicle is ON, each device communicating on the serial data circuit sends a state of health message to ensure that the device is operating properly. When a device stops communicating on the serial data circuit, for example, if the device loses power or ground, the state of health message it normally sends on the serial data circuit disappears. Other devices on the serial data circuit, which expect to receive that state of health message, detect its absence; those devices in turn set a DTC associated with the loss of state of health of the non-communicating device. A loss of serial data communications DTC does not represent a failure of the devices that contain the stored DTC.

Frequently Asked Questions about U184C Code

1. What does the OBDII code U184C mean?

Code U184C indicates a loss of communication between the instrument cluster and other modules on the low-speed CAN bus network.

2. What are the common symptoms of a U184C code?

Symptoms may include a non-functional instrument cluster, intermittent or no gauge operation, warning lights staying on, or loss of certain vehicle functions like turn signals.

3. What causes the U184C code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty instrument cluster, damaged or corroded wiring, a malfunctioning CAN bus connection, or a defective control module.

4. How can I diagnose the U184C code?

Start by checking the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion, test the CAN bus network's continuity, and use a scan tool to verify communication between modules.

5. Can a bad battery cause the U184C code?

Yes, a weak or failing battery can cause voltage drops, leading to communication issues on the CAN bus and triggering the code.

6. Is it safe to drive with a U184C code?

It may be unsafe, as the instrument cluster provides critical information like speed, fuel level, and warning indicators, which could impact driving decisions.

7. How do I fix a U184C code?

Repairs may involve replacing or repairing wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, updating software in the affected modules, or replacing the instrument cluster.

8. Can a U184C code clear itself?

In rare cases, the code may clear if the communication issue resolves, but it's recommended to diagnose and fix the root cause to prevent recurrence.

9. Do I need special tools to fix the U184C code?

Yes, a diagnostic scan tool capable of reading CAN bus data and a multimeter for electrical testing are often required.

10. How much does it cost to repair a U184C code?

Repair costs vary depending on the issue, ranging from $50–$150 for minor wiring repairs to over $500 if the instrument cluster needs replacement.
