Code U0158 Description

A Controller Area Network (CAN) is a vehicle bus standard designed to interconnect automotive devices without a host computer. Operating information and commands are exchanged among the devices. The devices have programmed information about what messages are needed to be exchanged on the serial data circuits. CAN bus uses two dedicated wires for communication. The wires are called CAN high and CAN low. When the CAN bus is in idle mode, both lines carry 2.5V. When data bits are being transmitted, the CAN high line goes to 3.75V, and the CAN low drops to 1.25V, thereby generating a 2.5V differential between the lines. Since communication relies on a voltage differential between the two bus lines, the CAN bus is NOT sensitive to inductive spikes, electrical fields, or other noise. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) sets when a periodic message from the Head Up Display Module has not been received.

What are the common symptoms of code U0158?

Symptoms may include the HUD not displaying any information, intermittent functionality, or warning lights on the dashboard.

What causes code U0158 to appear?

The code can be triggered by a faulty HUD module, damaged wiring or connectors, or issues with the CAN bus communication network.

Can a weak battery cause code U0158?

Yes, a weak or failing battery can lead to communication errors, including U0158, as insufficient power can disrupt system operations.

How can I diagnose the U0158 code?

Start by inspecting the HUD module, wiring, and connectors for damage or loose connections. Use a diagnostic scanner to check for additional communication-related codes.

Is the HUD module the only possible fault for U0158?

No, the issue could stem from wiring problems, connector corrosion, or a broader communication fault in the CAN bus network.

Can I reset the U0158 code without fixing the issue?

You can clear the code temporarily, but if the underlying issue isn’t resolved, the code will likely return.

How much does it cost to fix code U0158?

Repair costs vary based on the cause. Replacing a damaged HUD module can cost several hundred dollars, while fixing wiring or connectors may be less expensive.

Can I drive my car with code U0158?
