Code U0063 Description

A Controller Area Network (CAN) is a vehicle bus standard designed to interconnect automotive devices without a host computer. Operating information and commands are exchanged among the devices. The devices have programmed information about what messages are needed to be exchanged on the serial data circuits. CAN bus uses two dedicated wires for communication. The wires are called CAN high and CAN low. When the CAN bus is in idle mode, both lines carry 2.5V. When data bits are being transmitted, the CAN high line goes to 3.75V, and the CAN low drops to 1.25V, thereby generating a 2.5V differential between the lines. Since communication relies on a voltage differential between the two bus lines, the CAN bus is NOT sensitive to inductive spikes, electrical fields, or other noise. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) sets when a supervised periodic message that includes the transmitter device availability has not been received.

Frequently Asked Questions about U0063 Code

1. What does OBDII code U0063 mean?

U0063 indicates that there is a short circuit between the Vehicle Communication Bus 'D' negative (-) wire and positive (+) wire, which affects the vehicle's communication network.

2. What are the common symptoms of code U0063?

Symptoms may include a check engine light, failure of certain electronic modules to communicate, malfunctioning vehicle features like ABS or traction control, and erratic performance of connected systems.

3. What causes code U0063 to appear?

Common causes include damaged or corroded wiring, faulty control modules, poor electrical connections, or a short circuit in the communication bus wiring.

4. Can I drive with code U0063 active?

It's not recommended to drive with code U0063 active, as it may affect critical safety or performance systems in the vehicle, depending on the modules impacted.

5. How can I diagnose the root cause of code U0063?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors associated with the Vehicle Communication Bus 'D' for damage or corrosion. Use a multimeter to check for short circuits and consult a wiring diagram for your vehicle.

6. What tools are needed to repair a U0063 code?

You may need a multimeter, a scan tool capable of reading manufacturer-specific codes, wiring diagrams, and possibly replacement wiring or connectors.

7. How is U0063 typically fixed?

Repairs may involve replacing or repairing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, or replacing a faulty control module.

8. Is a professional mechanic required to fix code U0063?

While some DIY enthusiasts with electrical knowledge can attempt the repair, diagnosing and fixing communication bus issues often requires specialized tools and expertise, so a professional mechanic is recommended.

9. Will clearing the code with a scan tool fix U0063?

Clearing the code will not fix the underlying issue. The code will return if the short circuit or wiring problem is not resolved.
