P0651 - Inverted plug on common rail sensor can damage the engine ?

Question

We have an Alfa 1.9 JTD with 150HP

We change the original cables that connect the common rail senor, incidentally the worker invert the cable on the connection plug, and start the car.

The limp mode appears on the dash board and the car did not start any more.

We connected the car on a Bosch diagnostics and it give us the error code P0651
The car went to the alfa dealer and they said that the car damage the injection ECU.

Can this be possible? if we invert the plug on the cars of the common rail sensor the cars can be damage ?
