How do I fix the engine codes P0440 and P0442 on my 2000 Toyota Corolla 1.6L?

This code sadly is more or less a catch all. It means the computer see's a problem with the evap system but doesn't know where.

The P0442 indicates a small evap leak. This likely brought on the P0440 code.

Start with a new gas cap. If that doesn't solve the codes, then you are going to need to have a smoke test done to locate the leak. Once it's diagnosed you can then do the repair.
