Jiffylube has been using 5w30 instead of 5w20 for my last 10 oil changes over 6 months.  My mechanic advises that the oil pressure sensor system may have been damaged by using the wrong oil.  Had the oil pressure sensor replaced and Jiffylube has corrected the oil to 5w20 - but check engine light still comes on.  Could something else be damaged?

P0522 Oil pressure sensor circuit low

This is a electrical problem, rather than using the wrong weight oil, If the wrong oil weight was a problem you would set a P1521 or a P0521, (oil pressure sensor performance)  The ECM  self check itself looking for open circuit short circuit , grounds and rationality, what you have is a ground circuit, To determine what direction of repair is to do a electrical repair and measure the 5 volts reference. Here is a trouble shooting tree for P0521,

WHEN MONITORED
Engine running.

SET CONDITION
The engine oil pressure never reaches the calibrated specification with the engine RPM at 1250 .

POSSIBLE CAUSES

  • Engine oil/engine mechanical
  • (G6) Engine oil pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to battery voltage
  • Resistance (G6) engine oil pressure sensor signal circuit
  • (G6) Engine oil pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to ground
  • Resistance in (F856) 5-volt supply circuit
  • (F856) 5-volt supply circuit shorted to ground
  • Resistance in the (K900) sensor return circuit
  • Engine oil pressure sensor
  • PCM

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding.

Diagnostic Test

1. ACTIVE DTC

NOTE: Ensure that the engine oil is at the proper level. Also, check the customers oil change history to ensure that the oil is being changed at the correct intervals and that the proper oil viscosity is being used.

Ignition on, engine not running.
With a scan tool, read DTCs.
