Is this a necessary repair? Will it burn more fuel or damage engine if not repaired?

Check engine light on. It reads out error code P0440. Evap control system large leak detected.
   It is not gas cap leak. Another site said it was either the charcoal filter system or solenoid leak? Do I need to fix this. Will it burn more fuel? or damage engine. Or is just a nuisance light that I can ignore?

This will not cause any damage , nor make you use more fuel , but because of the year of the vehicle it can suspend any other code that may occur., the problem when the CK ENG LT comes on is you fail a emission test,  When a EVAP code is set there should be three code that would set, if you just have a P0440 you should be able to smell around for any fuel vapor leaks.
