I have had my 99 accord 4cyl. to the shop intending on changing my purge valve and canister based on p1457 code. My mechanic did not scan the codes he did a visual inspection and told me that the tank was seeping. It was my understanding that p1457 is a leak past the tank and that p1458 is a faulty cap or tank. There is a huge difference in the cost of the fix between the 2. Mechanic wants to replace the tank and filler neck. Although I can read and understand manuals, I am a 64 yr. old woman, on a fixed income and unable to do work myself. We are talkingabout 1/2 hr. labor vs. 5-6 hrs. labor to pull tank.
btw, my son, who also has an accord, says that he is of the mind that the purge valve/canister work will take care of my problem. I have strong fumes after driving, no visible drips coming off the tank and no drop in the fuel gague. Am I being over serviced?

HI there

The code is for an evap emissions leak. It is possible a leaking fuel tank could cause the code because the pressure sensor won't see any pressure changes. However, if you aren't getting any leak on the ground, I would start with the emission parts replacement and not the gas tank. You could also get a second opinion on the gas tank before investing in a replacement.
