The engine fault light is on but the engine is running fine and miles per gallon are very good No problem with the running of the car just at A strong smell of exhaust gas Otherwise the car engine runs fine

The code P0420 is for catalyst below efficiency. Based on your rich fuel smelling exhaust I would say you either need to replace the catalytic converter because it's not cleaning the exhaust properly or tune up the engine so it's burning the fuel better.
