P0073 Ambient air temperature sensor high

No this will not cause the temperature gauge to rise and cause the air condtion to not work properly. The code you have is the ambient air temperature sensor which  is not even connected, this is a disconnection code with the IAT sensor. If the vehicle is overheating the A/C will not work effectively, in the front of the radiator is the a/c condensor, once you turn the a/c on the cooling fan should come on. You should also check for cooling leaks
