I need to find out hy the overdrive light comes on and the truck has no power

My pick up check engine light has been on and i was told it has to do with the fuel system so i have changed the fuel filter and filler cap but it was still onbut has been running fine and then the overdrive light started flashing and the truck has reduced power and tries to die. please help i can't afford a large bill and its my dads truck that i acquired last year when he passed away.
