2000 Nissan Xterra XE with the 6-cylinder VG33E engine. The only error code that has been coming up (both before and since actual problems started developing) is P1320.

The first sign of real trouble was rough idling and a few episodes of dying while idle. Then it began to die while driving.

The problems have been getting worse and the last time I drove it, the tach needle was swinging wildly even when everything seemed relatively normal (a new development).

Hi there,

Most often this is a failed distributor when you have the P1320 code. It's a code for the primary ignition which is the ignition coil on these. This is part of the distributor. Based on your symptoms it sounds like you need a new distributor.
