P0742 Chevrolet - please help my 2001 chevy impala

my 2001 chevy impala got this code. two days ago i was on the freeway and all of a sudden the car refused to accelerate acting as tho it was in neutral. i have had problem with it shifting gears, it would not want to shift for 30-60 seconds at 40 mph. i can start it but the transmission will not shift into any gear and is acting like it is just in neutral. the fluid in it was overfilled and a medium dark brown so i took off the drain pan, relaced to filter and added the correct amount of fluid, but it is still doing the same thing. what should i try next?
