P1296 - audi a-6 quattro 4.2

Question

i failed smog on my 2001 audi a-6 4.2 quattro. the fail codes are p0116 and p1296. what do they stand for and how do i remedy?

P0116 Engine coolant temperature Range / perfromance

P1296 Cooling system malfunction

Remedy for this, the thermostat,  and coolant temperature sensor.these component should always go together, Replace both the thermostat and coolant temperature sensor

 

Here is a Audi that had a leaking coolant for quite some time. The owner would just top off with water which eventually depleted the cooling system with just water, and the water in return develop rust, The vehicle owner replaced the coolant temperature sensor, and replace the thermostat. P0116 kept returning, and would just get cleared, When the vehicle was inspected for P0116 (coolant temperature range / performance) it was recommended that cooling system be flushed and the proper coolant added. Having the proper coolant mixure solved P0116. Coolant temperature range/perfomance affects all European vehicles if the coolant mixure is not proper.
