2000 ford ranger does not use code P1761 in the service manual. Try to use a different OBD-II reader the one you are using is not compatible with your car.

That's B.S.. a 2000 ranger with a 4r55e uses a p1761 trouble code. It is the c shift sensor. The harness is bad or the sensor is shot.
I have one and have been chasing an OD slippage problem. This is the last repair needed to finish fixing mine.
