Ford Focus CC3 2.0L Diesel with engine code P0490

Question

i have a ford focus, engine light has come on, diagnostic code is P0490, no other symptons, ive read about loss of power, smoke from exhaust etc but i have no other symptoms. Kwick fit had a look and cleared it out, they said there was a lot soot but after half hour of driving the light came back on again. ford quoted me £320 for a new EGR and gasket but i just want to know if its really what i need as i have no other problems then this engine light coming on!! help me please x

I would remove the EGR and clean it, along with its piping (it is has an egr pipe)

you can use wd-40 and a wire brush, clean the carbon built up then use brake cleaner to clean the parts off.
