P0708 Ford - 3rd gear and od gone?

Question

the od light started blinking and when the truck should shift into 3rd gear it just winds out on the tach and stops accelerating. this happened all at once , so prior slippage.have transmission range sensor codes. replaced sensor still no 3rd gear.does the sensor have anything to do with the transmission actually shifting?
