is this generally an expensive fix? is it something I can easily fix myself. Once fixed will the ck engine light go off?

The problem is the mass air flow sensor.  You can try to clean it with mass air flow sensor cleaner. if the code comes back. you can get a rebuilt/aftermarket part  which shouldnt be more than $150.
