I'm receiving a P0170 code on my 2001 New Passat. My local mechanic can not get information on that from his generic scanner with data from AllData.

There is a screen in the air filter housing that looks pretty well clogged. Could this be the root of my issue? The mechanic thinks the code has something to do with fuel trim, but it's a proprietary VW code.

The P0170 code means that the engine control module can not get the fuel/air mixture to adjust to factory specs. This problem could be due to an injector leak, intake air leak, bad O2 sensor or faulty air flow meter.

Clogged or dirty air filter or air filter can caused an improper air flow meter reading.
