Code P2C20 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The control module controls a series of actuators to ensure optimal engine performance. The control module does this by reading values from a variety of sensors, interprets the data, and adjusts the engine actuators accordingly. The fuel pressure regulator is a part of the high pressure fuel pump. The fuel pressure regulator is the solenoid valve that controls the pressure in the fuel rail. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the desired fuel rail pressure and the fuel rail pressure are not within 3 MPa (435 PSI) of each other for greater than 30 s. at idle speed.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2C20 2016 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2C20 mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

P2C20 indicates a performance issue with the fuel pressure regulator, where high fuel pressure is detected during a cold start.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P2C20 in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include rough cold starts, extended cranking, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential check engine light illumination.

3. What causes the P2C20 code to trigger?

Common causes include a faulty fuel pressure regulator, a malfunctioning fuel pressure sensor, a clogged fuel return line, or defective engine control module (ECM) programming.

4. Can a dirty fuel filter cause the P2C20 code?

While not a primary cause, a dirty or restricted fuel filter can contribute to abnormal fuel pressure, potentially leading to the code.

5. How do you diagnose the P2C20 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis typically involves scanning for codes, checking fuel pressure readings during a cold start, inspecting the fuel pressure regulator, and testing the fuel pressure sensor.

6. Is it safe to drive with the P2C20 code active?

Driving with this code may not immediately damage the vehicle, but prolonged high fuel pressure could lead to engine or fuel system issues.

7. How is the P2C20 code fixed?

Repairs may involve replacing the fuel pressure regulator, cleaning or replacing the fuel return line, recalibrating the ECM, or replacing the fuel pressure sensor.

8. Can the P2C20 code trigger other engine codes?

Yes, it may be accompanied by other fuel system-related codes, such as P0089 (fuel pressure regulator performance) or P0191 (fuel rail pressure sensor performance).

9. How much does it cost to repair the P2C20 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $150 to $500, depending on whether the fuel pressure regulator or sensor needs replacement.

10. Can extreme cold weather cause the P2C20 code to appear?

Yes, extreme cold can affect fuel pressure regulation and highlight existing issues, potentially triggering the code during a cold start.
