The Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) sensor is a planar dual-cell limit current sensor. The sensor element of the A/F sensor is the combination of a Nernst concentration cell (sensor cell) with an oxygen-pump cell, which transports ions. It has a heater in the element.
The sensor is capable of precise measurement λ= 1, but also in the lean and rich range. Together with its control electronics, the sensor outputs a clear, continuous signal throughout a wide range (0.7 < λ < air).
The exhaust gas components diffuse through the diffusion gap at the electrode of the oxygen pump and Nernst concentration cell, where they are brought to thermodynamic balance. An electronic circuit controls the pump current through the oxygen pump cell so that the composition of the exhaust gas in the diffusion gap remains constant at λ = 1. Therefore, the A/F sensor is able to indicate air/fuel ratio by this pumping of current. In addition, a heater is integrated in the sensor to ensure the required operating temperature of 700 - 800°C (1,292 - 1,472°F).

    4. Stop engine and reconnect mass air flow sensor harness connector.
    5. Make sure Detected Trouble Code (DTC) P0102 is displayed.
    6. Erase the DTC memory.
    7. Make sure no codes are stored in the ECM.
    8. Run engine for at least 10 minutes at idle speed.

  • Hey thanks for the reply I performed a smoke test yesterday witch came back clean the only hose that was leaking was the intake breather hose got that replaced also changed the air filter and the code came back again the exaust leak test was also performed and also came back clean. I got my mechanic to erase all code swell as the mass air flow code instead of disconnecting it. this code is really starting to drive me and my mechanic crazy lol!!

  • Did you fallow all the steps and perform the the mixture ratio self-learning procedure? there is a factory service bulletin that recommend performing the procedure if the code comes back.

    If you did, then the other things I have seen is triggering the code is the ECM, Catalytic Converter and MAF. You could start by cleaning the MAF and Throttle Body

  • I just performed the Mixture ratio self-learning procedure just as you mentioned about 2 hours ago and so far the light hasn't come back on. But if the light comes back on we also suspect it might be the catalytic converter but honestly it's starting to become a guessing game. Really hoping the reset solved the problem thanks again for all the advice!!

  • I had p2a00, on my 2006 INFINITI G 35 Coupe, first I smoked the intake but if it was an intake leak, codes for B1&B2 (P2A00/P2A03) would appear UNLESS the leak was at the lower plenum feeding the head, so if you just have that one code for one bank, chances are, it’s not an intake leak. It will be specific to that bank, an exhaust leak will be Pre Cat up to the Cat intake flange, any leak after that won’t affect that sensor, start looking at harness connections for a corroded pin, the sensor itself, fuel pressure reg, and leaking or clogged injector
    I did do the air fuel mixture reset with the MAF unplug, the code did go away, but the sensor still reads a constant low voltage of .285-.30v from the previous .21-.23v which apparently is within specs, according to my mode 6 still getting crappy, gas, mileage, but car runs fabulous

  • Also if this code appears after installing a new head unit/interface there are 2 ground screws for the ECU behind the climate controls/head unit that may have been undone and forgotten about, that’ll do it.

  • Btw , this all started after installed brand new aftermarket cats and 4 brand new DENSO AFR/O2 sensors
    Cats are $158/pr eBay Direct fit, but I’ll tell ya what they are higher flow 3 way catalyst the exhaust carries the exact same factory tone, with just a few dB’s louder and sound fabulous 3 years no CAT codes from them j/s don’t be afraid to try them unless you want to spend $900 a piece
