Code P2484 Buick Description

The Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors (EGTS) are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. The exhaust temperature sensor 1 is the first exhaust temperature sensor on the exhaust system, the following exhaust temperature sensors are counted upward from the engine outlet to the exhaust system end. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the exhaust gas temperature signal circuit and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. The Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor temperature information is used by the ECM during the exhaust gas particulate filter cleaning process. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor resistance has changed greater than a calibrated amount in less than 1 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2484 Buick Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2484 mean for a Buick?

P2484 indicates an intermittent issue in the circuit of Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 5, which monitors exhaust gas temperature to optimize emissions and engine performance.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P2484 code on a Buick?

Symptoms may include poor fuel efficiency, increased emissions, reduced engine performance, and the check engine light being illuminated.

3. What causes the P2484 code to appear on a Buick?

Common causes include a faulty EGT sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the sensor circuit, a short circuit, or an issue with the vehicle's powertrain control module (PCM).

4. Can I drive my Buick with a P2484 code?

While it may still be drivable, ignoring the code could lead to increased emissions or damage to the catalytic converter. It's best to address the issue promptly.

5. How do I diagnose the P2484 code on my Buick?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion. Use a multimeter to test the EGT sensor's resistance and check for circuit continuity. If no issues are found, the PCM may need further evaluation.

6. How do I fix the P2484 code on a Buick?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty EGT sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, or reprogramming/repairing the PCM if necessary.

7. What tools are needed to fix the P2484 code on a Buick?

Basic tools include a multimeter for electrical testing, a scan tool for resetting the code, and potentially a socket set for sensor replacement.

8. How much does it cost to repair a P2484 code on a Buick?

Repair costs can vary, with EGT sensor replacement typically costing $100–$300, depending on parts and labor. Wiring repairs or PCM replacement may add to the expense.

9. Can a faulty EGT sensor cause engine damage?

While the sensor itself won’t directly cause engine damage, ignoring it can lead to improper air-fuel mixture and overheating, potentially harming the catalytic converter or engine components.

10. How can I prevent the P2484 code from occurring again?

Regular maintenance, including inspecting wiring and sensors for wear, can help prevent this code. Ensure repairs are performed correctly using quality parts.
