P246A Ford Code - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic Bank 2 Sensor 3

Quick Answer

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) continuously monitors the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) for proper circuit continuity and out of range high values. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) Bank 2 Sensor 3, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 3 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 3 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is Moderate - service should be scheduled soon. The vehicle may still be drivable for short trips if it runs normally, but avoid hard driving and repair it soon.

Code P246A Ford Description

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) continuously monitors the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) for proper circuit continuity and out of range high values. The EGTS is located in front of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and/or in front of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The EGTS detects exhaust gas temperature and converts it into a voltage and feeds back to the PCM with the voltage signal in order to control engine conditions to effectively reduce emissions. The PCM sets the P246A OBDII code when the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor is out of factory specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions about P246A Ford Code

1. What does the OBDII code P246A mean on a Ford vehicle?

P246A indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic for Bank 2 Sensor 3. This means the sensor is sending inconsistent or erratic signals to the engine control module (ECM).

2. What are the common symptoms of code P246A in a Ford?

Symptoms may include a check engine light, poor fuel efficiency, reduced engine performance, and the vehicle entering limp mode in some cases.

3. What causes the P246A code to appear in Ford vehicles?

Common causes include a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, excessive soot buildup in the exhaust system, or an ECM software issue.

4. How do you diagnose the P246A code in a Ford?

Diagnosis involves scanning for codes, inspecting the exhaust gas temperature sensor and its wiring, checking for soot buildup, and testing the sensor's resistance and voltage output with a multimeter.

5. Can you drive with the P246A code on a Ford?

It is not recommended to drive long-term with this code, as it can affect engine performance and emissions. Prolonged driving may also cause further damage to the exhaust system or DPF.

6. How do you fix code P246A on a Ford?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, cleaning the exhaust system, or updating the ECM software if necessary.

7. Is the P246A code related to the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)?

Yes, the exhaust gas temperature sensor plays a role in monitoring DPF operation. A faulty sensor can disrupt DPF regeneration and lead to additional problems.

8. How much does it cost to fix the P246A code on a Ford?

The cost can vary but typically ranges from $150 to $400, depending on whether the issue is with the sensor, wiring, or additional repairs like cleaning the exhaust system.

9. Can a P246A code cause a failed emissions test?

Yes, a P246A code can result in failed emissions testing because the exhaust system may not be functioning correctly, leading to increased emissions.

10. How can you prevent the P246A code from reoccurring on a Ford?

Regular maintenance of the exhaust system, ensuring proper DPF operation, and addressing any sensor or wiring issues promptly can help prevent this code from returning.
