AutoCodes – Chevrolet – P245D 2017 Chevrolet Silverado

P245D 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Control Circuit High Voltage

Quick Answer

The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) bypass valve position sensor to determine the position of the bypass valve. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler Bypass Valve, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Valve harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Valve circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is Moderate - service should be scheduled soon. The vehicle may still be drivable for short trips if it runs normally, but avoid hard driving and repair it soon.

Code P245D 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) bypass valve position sensor to determine the position of the bypass valve. The ECM sends a reference voltage through the 5-volt reference circuit to the position sensor. The ECM provides a voltage return path for the sensor through the low reference circuit. A variable voltage signal, based on the valve position, is sent from the sensor to the ECM through the position sensor signal circuit. The ECM compares the actual bypass valve position with the desired bypass valve position when the valve is commanded open or closed. The EGR cooler bypass valve is controlled by the ECM through the bypass valve motor high control and the low control circuits. The ECM will pulse width modulate the low control circuit to ground when EGR cooler bypass is desired.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the EGR cooler bypass valve control circuits are shorted to voltage for greater than 3 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P245D 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P245D mean on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

P245D indicates a high voltage issue in the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler Bypass Control Circuit, meaning the system is not operating as intended.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P245D in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms include a check engine light, decreased fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, and potential engine overheating during heavy loads.

3. What causes code P245D to appear on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include a faulty EGR cooler bypass valve, wiring or connector issues, a malfunctioning EGR temperature sensor, or a failed powertrain control module (PCM).

4. Can I drive my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado with the P245D code?

While you can drive the vehicle, ignoring the issue can lead to reduced performance, increased emissions, and potential engine damage over time.

5. How is code P245D diagnosed?

A mechanic will use an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, inspect the EGR bypass valve and related wiring, and test the voltage and resistance in the circuit.

6. How do I fix the P245D code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repairs may involve replacing the EGR cooler bypass valve, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, or updating/reprogramming the PCM.

7. How much does it cost to repair the P245D code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $200 to $600, depending on whether the issue lies with the bypass valve, wiring, or other components.

8. Can a dirty EGR system cause the P245D code?

Yes, carbon buildup in the EGR system can restrict flow and cause issues with the bypass valve, triggering the code.

9. Will clearing the code fix the problem?

Clearing the code without addressing the underlying issue may temporarily turn off the check engine light, but the problem will likely return.

10. Is the P245D code covered under warranty for a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

It depends on your warranty coverage and mileage. Check with your dealer to see if emissions-related components are still covered.
