Code P244C Cadillac Description

The diesel exhaust aftertreatment system consists of an underhood pre-catalytic converter and an underbody catalyst converter. The underbody catalyst converter also consists of the main Diesel Oxidation Catalyst and the coated Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). One of the main purposes of the DPF is to collect particulates from the engine exhaust in order to minimize discharge of soot to the atmosphere. The soot particles accumulate in the channels of the DPF and are burned off at regular intervals through a process called regeneration. This prevents the DPF from clogging. The Engine Control Module (ECM) commands the DPF regeneration after calculating various vehicle conditions such as DPF pressure difference, exhaust gas temperature, engine oil quality, engine speed, etc. Excessive accumulation of the soot in the DPF can cause a drop in the engine performance. During regeneration, additional fuel is injected via multiple post injections in order to increase the exhaust gas temperature. During this period, the DPF temperature is raised to approximately 600°C (1112°F) and the accumulated soot is oxidized or burned off into carbon dioxide (CO2). The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the exhaust gas temperature is too low during regeneration.

Frequently Asked Questions about P244C Cadillac Code

1. What does OBDII code P244C mean on a Cadillac?

P244C indicates that the catalyst temperature is too low during the regeneration process of the diesel particulate filter (DPF), which may prevent proper soot burn-off.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P244C in a Cadillac?

Symptoms include increased exhaust emissions, reduced fuel efficiency, illuminated check engine light, and possible DPF regeneration failure.

3. What causes the P244C code to appear?

Common causes include a malfunctioning exhaust temperature sensor, low-quality fuel, issues with the DPF system, or exhaust leaks.

4. Can I drive my Cadillac with a P244C code?

While it might still be drivable, ignoring this code can lead to DPF clogging, reduced engine performance, and potential damage to the exhaust system.

5. How do I fix a P244C code on my Cadillac?

Repairs may involve replacing a faulty exhaust temperature sensor, cleaning or replacing the DPF, repairing exhaust leaks, or ensuring proper fuel quality.

6. How is the P244C code diagnosed?

A mechanic will use a scan tool to check sensor data, inspect the exhaust system for leaks or damage, and verify the DPF regeneration process.

7. Can a clogged DPF cause the P244C code?

Yes, a clogged DPF can prevent proper regeneration, leading to low catalyst temperatures and triggering this code.

8. Does low fuel quality contribute to the P244C code?

Yes, low-quality or contaminated fuel can disrupt the regeneration process and cause issues with catalyst temperature.

9. What tools are needed to troubleshoot a P244C code?

Diagnostics typically require an OBDII scanner, a temperature sensor tester, and tools to inspect and clean the DPF system.

10. How much does it cost to repair a P244C code on a Cadillac?

Repair costs vary but can range from $100 for sensor replacement to over $1,000 if the DPF needs to be replaced or extensively cleaned.
