  • I own (just paid off last month own) a 2012 Tundra CrewMax TRD SR5 towing pkg, 4.6L. I had the P2440 code pop up after cranking my truck on a Sunday after church. It had run fine that morning. Because the truck was now in "limp mode", I decided to take it to the local dealer. I called and was assured that there was a special extended warranty 10yrs/150k on the Air Injection System issue and they could get it done that day. About 3pm, they called to give me the bad news. According to them, Toyota only covers up to the 2011 Tundras and after that ONLY the 5.7L engines can be "reset" or "flashed" to correct the issue. I was then informed it would cost $2200 to fix (which was less than what I'd seen online) but still, a deal breaker day downer. I told them not to do the work until I have a chance to deal with Toyota Customer Care directly about it and picked up the truck that afternoon but still got charged the hundred dollar diagnostic charge.

    I proceeded to take my bluetooth OBD-II reader and try to reset the fault code myself since they did not or would not do it. When I did, the check engine light went off but the TracCtrl light stayed on. So I turned off the ignition and restarted. When I did, all my warning indicators were blank, my engine showed normal operation, no more limp mode, and I've been driving it now for two days w/o incident. I think the dealer service either missed it or was trying to capitalize, but so far, it's been my experience to reset the fault code and see if that does the trick. Apparently, it was a one time system glitch that the valve one bank one showed a "malfunction" and it could have been a false positive. Either way, if you have this engine 4.6 L 1UR-FE V8 (VVT-i) 310 and you experience this error, insist that they check the fuses and reset the fault before telling you to shell out mucho deniro. Get a 2nd opinion also.
