Code P242D 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The Exhaust Gas Temperature sensors (EGTS) are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. Exhaust temperature sensor 1 is the first exhaust temperature sensor in the exhaust system, the following exhaust temperature sensors are counted upward from the engine outlet to the exhaust system end. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the exhaust gas temperature signal circuit and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. The exhaust gas temperature sensor temperature information is used by the ECM during the exhaust gas particulate filter cleaning process. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will ve set when the ECM detects that the exhaust gas temperature sensor is greater than 900 Ω for greater than 2 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P242D 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P242D mean for a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

P242D indicates a high voltage issue in the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 3 circuit, which monitors the exhaust system's temperature to help regulate emissions and protect components.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P242D in a 2015 Silverado?

Typical symptoms include the check engine light turning on, reduced fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, and possibly the engine entering limp mode.

3. What causes the P242D code in a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include a faulty EGT sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the sensor circuit, or a malfunctioning powertrain control module (PCM).

4. Can I drive my Silverado with the P242D code?

While it may be possible to drive short distances, prolonged driving with this code can lead to increased emissions, reduced performance, and potential damage to the exhaust system or catalytic converter.

5. How do I fix the P242D code on my 2015 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repairs typically involve inspecting and replacing the EGT sensor if faulty, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, or, in rare cases, reprogramming or replacing the PCM.

6. How do I test the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor for code P242D?

You can test the sensor using a multimeter to check for proper voltage readings or continuity. Compare the results to manufacturer specifications to determine if the sensor is functioning correctly.

7. Where is Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 3 located on a 2015 Silverado?

Sensor 3 is typically located in the exhaust system downstream of the catalytic converter, but refer to the vehicle’s service manual for the exact location.

8. Can a dirty or clogged exhaust system trigger code P242D?

While unlikely, excessive soot or carbon deposits in the exhaust system could affect the EGT sensor's readings, potentially contributing to the issue.

9. What tools are needed to diagnose and repair code P242D?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter, and basic hand tools to diagnose and repair the issue. A service manual is also helpful for locating components and specifications.

10. How much does it cost to fix the P242D code on a 2015 Silverado?

The cost can vary depending on the issue. Replacing the EGT sensor typically costs $100–$300, including parts and labor. Wiring repairs or PCM replacements may cost more.
