Code P242D 2014 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Temperature sensors (EGTS) are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. Exhaust temperature sensor 1 is the first exhaust temperature sensor in the exhaust system, the following exhaust temperature sensors are counted upward from the engine outlet to the exhaust system end. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the exhaust gas temperature signal circuit and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. The exhaust gas temperature sensor temperature information is used by the ECM during the exhaust gas particulate filter cleaning process. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will ve set when the ECM detects that the exhaust gas temperature sensor is greater than 900 Ω for greater than 2 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P242D 2014 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P242D mean on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

P242D indicates an issue with the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 3, specifically a high voltage reading from the sensor circuit.

2. What are the common symptoms of a P242D code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms may include the check engine light turning on, reduced fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, and the vehicle possibly entering limp mode.

3. What causes the P242D code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty EGT sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the sensor circuit, and, less commonly, issues with the vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM).

4. Can I keep driving my 2014 GMC Sierra with a P242D code?

While it may be possible to continue driving, prolonged operation could lead to reduced performance or damage to the exhaust system. It’s best to address the issue promptly.

5. How do I fix the P242D code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may involve replacing the faulty EGT sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, and clearing the code using an OBDII scanner.

6. How can I diagnose the P242D code on my 2014 GMC Sierra?

Use an OBDII scanner to verify the code, inspect the EGT sensor and its wiring for damage or corrosion, and test the sensor’s voltage output with a multimeter.

7. Where is Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 3 located on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

EGT Sensor 3 is typically located on the exhaust system, often near or after the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), depending on the engine configuration.

8. Can a dirty Diesel Particulate Filter cause a P242D code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

A clogged DPF can lead to abnormal exhaust temperatures, potentially triggering issues with the EGT sensor, but the sensor itself is usually the primary cause.

9. How much does it cost to repair the P242D code on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

The cost can vary but typically ranges from $100 to $300 for parts and labor if the EGT sensor needs replacement.

10. Will clearing the code with an OBDII scanner fix the P242D issue?

Clearing the code will only reset the check engine light temporarily. If the underlying issue isn’t resolved, the code will likely return.
