Code P242C 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Temperature sensors (EGTS) are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. Exhaust temperature sensor 1 is the first exhaust temperature sensor in the exhaust system, the following exhaust temperature sensors are counted upward from the engine outlet to the exhaust system end. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the exhaust gas temperature signal circuit and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. The exhaust gas temperature sensor temperature information is used by the ECM during the exhaust gas particulate filter cleaning process. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will ve set when the ECM detects that the exhaust gas temperature sensor is less than 158 Ω for greater than 2 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P242C 2017 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P242C mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P242C indicates a low voltage issue in the circuit for Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 3, which monitors the temperature of exhaust gases to ensure proper emissions control.

2. What are the symptoms of the P242C code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include a check engine light, reduced fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, or the vehicle entering limp mode.

3. What causes the P242C code to appear?

Potential causes include a faulty EGT sensor 3, damaged wiring or connectors, soot buildup on the sensor, or issues with the vehicle's PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

4. How can I diagnose the P242C code?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion, testing the EGT sensor with a multimeter, and checking for exhaust leaks near the sensor.

5. Can I drive with the P242C code?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it may lead to increased emissions, reduced performance, or damage to the exhaust system.

6. How do I fix the P242C code on my 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty EGT sensor 3, repairing damaged wiring, cleaning the sensor to remove soot buildup, or updating/reprogramming the PCM if necessary.

7. Where is Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 3 located on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Sensor 3 is typically located in the exhaust system downstream of the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), but consult a repair manual for exact placement.

8. How much does it cost to fix the P242C code?

Repair costs can range from $100 to $400, depending on whether the sensor, wiring, or PCM requires replacement or repair.

9. Can a dirty or clogged DPF cause the P242C code?

Yes, a clogged DPF can cause abnormal exhaust temperatures, potentially triggering this code.

10. Will clearing the code with a scanner fix the P242C issue?

Clearing the code may temporarily turn off the check engine light, but the underlying issue must be addressed to prevent the code from returning.
