AutoCodes – Mercury – P242A Mercury

P242A Mercury Code - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 3

Quick Answer

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) continuously monitors the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) for proper circuit continuity and out of range high values. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) Bank 1 Sensor 3, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 3 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 3 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P242A Mercury Description

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) continuously monitors the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) for proper circuit continuity and out of range high values. The EGTS is located in front of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and/or in front of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The EGTS detects exhaust gas temperature and converts it into a voltage and feeds back to the PCM with the voltage signal in order to control engine conditions to effectively reduce emissions. The PCM sets the P242A OBDII code when the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor is out of factory specifications.

- Common symptoms include decreased fuel efficiency, rough idling, and the illumination of the check engine light.

2. What is the primary cause of OBDII code P242A in a Mercury vehicle?

- The primary cause is typically a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor in Bank 1 Sensor 3, which leads to inaccurate readings.

3. How can I diagnose the OBDII code P242A in my Mercury?

- Diagnosis involves using an OBDII scanner to retrieve the specific code, followed by inspecting the exhaust gas temperature sensor and its wiring for any signs of damage.

4. Is it safe to continue driving my Mercury with the P242A fault code present?

- It is not recommended to continue driving with the fault code present, as it can lead to potential engine damage or decreased performance.

5. Can I repair the OBDII code P242A in my Mercury myself?

- While some DIY enthusiasts may attempt to replace the exhaust gas temperature sensor, it is best to have a qualified mechanic address the issue to ensure proper installation and calibration.

6. How much does it typically cost to repair the OBDII code P242A in a Mercury vehicle?

- Repair costs can vary depending on the severity of the issue and the labor rates in your area, but expect to pay anywhere from $150 to $400 for parts and labor.

7. Are there any preventive measures I can take to avoid OBDII code P242A in my Mercury?

- Regular maintenance, including periodic sensor inspections and timely repairs of any related issues, can help prevent the occurrence of the P242A fault code.

8. Can a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor cause other problems in my Mercury besides triggering the P242A code?

- Yes, a faulty sensor can lead to incorrect fuel-air mixtures, reduced engine performance, and potential damage to the catalytic converter over time.

9. How long does it typically take to repair the OBDII code P242A in a Mercury at a repair shop?

- The repair process usually takes around 1-2 hours, but it can vary depending on the accessibility of the sensor and any additional complications encountered during the repair.

10. Will resetting the check engine light make the OBDII code P242A go away permanently?

- Resetting the check engine light may temporarily clear the code, but if the underlying issue causing the fault code is not addressed, the code is likely to reappear.
