P228C 2018 GMC Sierra Code - Fuel Pressure Regulator Control Performance Low Pressure
Quick Answer
The fuel rail pressure sensor detects fuel pressure within the fuel rail. Common causes include Faulty Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor, High Pressure Fuel Pump harness is open or shorted, High Pressure Fuel Pump electrical circuit poor connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P228C 2018 GMC Sierra Description
High pressure fuel is regulated by the high-pressure fuel pump actuator, which is a part of the high-pressure fuel pump. The high-pressure fuel pump actuator is a solenoid valve. The ECM provides a voltage on the actuator high control circuit and ground on the actuator low control circuit. Both circuits are controlled through output drivers within the ECM. When deactivated, both drivers are disabled. When activated, the high control circuit driver energizes the high-pressure fuel pump actuator, and the low control circuit driver Pulse-Width Modulates (PWM) the low control circuit to ground.
The high-pressure mechanical fuel pump is driven by three lobes on the camshaft. The ECM uses the camshaft and crankshaft position sensor inputs to synchronize the high-pressure fuel pump actuator with the position of each of the camshaft lobes. The ECM regulates fuel pressure by adjusting the portion of each pump stroke that provides fuel to the rail.
The ECM monitors the fuel rail fuel pressure sensor and the high-pressure fuel pump actuator to determine if the commanded and actual pressure are within a predetermined range, or if the amount of fuel pressure correction exceeds a calibrated pressure.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will set if the actual fuel rail pressure is 3 MPa (435 psi) less than the desired fuel pressure. The condition exists for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P228C 2018 GMC Sierra Code
What does the OBDII code P228C mean for a 2018 GMC Sierra?
The code P228C indicates a fuel pressure regulator control performance issue, where the fuel pressure is detected to be lower than expected.
What are the common symptoms of code P228C in a 2018 GMC Sierra?
Symptoms include poor engine performance, difficulty starting, reduced fuel efficiency, and possibly an illuminated check engine light.
What causes the P228C code on a 2018 GMC Sierra?
Common causes include a faulty fuel pressure sensor, a malfunctioning fuel pump, clogged fuel filters, or issues with the fuel pressure regulator.
Can driving with the P228C code damage my 2018 GMC Sierra?
Yes, driving with this code can lead to engine misfires, poor fuel delivery, and potential long-term damage to the engine.
How is the P228C code diagnosed on a 2018 GMC Sierra?
Technicians use a scan tool to confirm the code, inspect the fuel pressure readings, and check for faulty components like the fuel pressure sensor or regulator.
How can I fix the P228C code on my 2018 GMC Sierra?
Repairs may include replacing the fuel pressure sensor, cleaning or replacing the fuel filter, repairing the fuel pump, or addressing wiring issues.
Is the P228C code related to low fuel pressure?
Yes, the code specifically indicates that the fuel pressure is lower than the expected range due to a performance issue in the control system.
Can a clogged fuel filter cause the P228C code on a 2018 GMC Sierra?
Yes, a clogged fuel filter can restrict fuel flow, leading to low fuel pressure and triggering the P228C code.
Do I need to replace the fuel pump to fix code P228C on a 2018 GMC Sierra?
Not always. The issue could also stem from the fuel pressure sensor or regulator, so the fuel pump should only be replaced if testing confirms it’s faulty.
Will clearing the P228C code resolve the issue on my 2018 GMC Sierra?
No, clearing the code without addressing the underlying problem will likely result in the code returning and continued performance issues.
