Code P227B 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The Barometric Pressure (BARO) Sensor 2, also referred to as the Turbocharger Inlet Air Pressure (TCIAP) sensor, is integral to the Multifunction Intake Air Sensor and is used for humidity sensor signal correction. The sensor responds to changes in altitude and atmospheric conditions and gives the Engine Control Module (ECM) an indication of intake air pressure relative to humidity. The ECM provides a 5 V reference and signal circuits to the TCIAP which shares a low reference circuit with IAT 1 and 2. Ignition voltage and ground circuits are also supplied to the Multifunction Intake Air Sensor internal circuits for these sensors:
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 1
- IAT Sensor 2
- Humidity Sensor
- Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor
- Turbocharger Inlet Air Pressure (TCIAP) Sensor (BARO 2)
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the BARO sensor pressure is less than 50 kPa (7.3 PSI) or greater than 115 kPa (16.7 PSI), for greater than 62.5 ms.

Frequently Asked Questions about P227B 2017 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P227B mean for a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Code P227B indicates a performance issue with Barometric Pressure Sensor 2, meaning the sensor is not functioning within its expected range.

2. What are the common symptoms of a P227B code?

Symptoms may include poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, difficulty starting the engine, and the Check Engine Light turning on.

3. What causes the P227B code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty barometric pressure sensor, wiring or connector issues, a malfunctioning PCM (Powertrain Control Module), or environmental factors like extreme altitude changes.

4. Can a dirty air filter trigger a P227B code?

While unlikely, a severely clogged air filter can potentially affect airflow and pressure readings, exacerbating issues with the barometric pressure sensor.

5. How do you diagnose a P227B code?

Diagnosis typically involves using a scan tool to monitor sensor readings, visually inspecting sensor wiring and connectors, and testing the barometric pressure sensor with a multimeter.

6. Can driving with a P227B code damage my 2017 GMC Sierra?

Prolonged driving with this code may result in poor fuel economy and engine performance, but it is unlikely to cause immediate severe damage.

7. How do you fix a P227B code?

Repairs may include replacing the barometric pressure sensor, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or reprogramming/updating the PCM.

8. Is the barometric pressure sensor the same as the MAP sensor?

No, the barometric pressure sensor measures atmospheric pressure, while the MAP sensor measures pressure inside the intake manifold.

9. Does altitude affect the barometric pressure sensor?

Yes, extreme altitude changes can momentarily affect sensor readings, but the sensor should adapt quickly. Persistent issues may indicate a malfunction.

10. How much does it cost to fix a P227B code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

The repair cost depends on the issue. Replacing the sensor typically ranges from $100 to $300, including parts and labor. Wiring repairs or PCM replacements may cost more.
