Code P2272 2017 GMC Sierra Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content of the exhaust stream. When the engine is started, the Engine Control Module (ECM) operates in an Open Loop mode, ignoring the HO2S signal voltage while calculating the air-to-fuel ratio. While the engine runs, the HO2S heats up and begins to generate a voltage within a range of 0 - 1, 000 mV. Once sufficient HO2S voltage fluctuation is observed by the ECM, Closed Loop is entered. The ECM uses the HO2S voltage to determine the air-to-fuel ratio. An HO2S voltage that increases toward 1, 000 mV indicates a rich fuel mixture. An HO2S voltage that decreases toward 0 mV indicates a lean fuel mixture.
The heating elements inside each HO2S heat the sensor to bring the sensor up to operating conditions faster. This allows the system to enter Closed Loop earlier and the ECM to calculate the air-to-fuel ratio sooner.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM does not detect an HO2S voltage greater than 800 mV before accumulated mass airflow exceeds a calibrated value.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2272 2017 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBD-II code P2272 mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P2272 indicates that the downstream oxygen sensor (Bank 2 Sensor 2) is reporting a consistently lean condition, which means the exhaust has too much oxygen.

What are the symptoms of code P2272 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include the check engine light turning on, reduced fuel efficiency, rough idling, or a noticeable drop in engine performance.

What causes the P2272 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Potential causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, exhaust leaks near the sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, or an issue with the engine running lean.

How do you diagnose the P2272 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis involves using an OBD-II scanner to check for related codes, inspecting the oxygen sensor and wiring, testing the sensor's voltage output, and checking for exhaust leaks.

Can I drive my 2017 GMC Sierra with a P2272 code?

It's possible to drive for a short period, but ignoring the code can lead to decreased fuel efficiency and potential damage to the catalytic converter.

How do you fix the P2272 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the downstream oxygen sensor (Bank 2 Sensor 2), fixing exhaust leaks, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or addressing engine performance issues causing a lean condition.

Where is Bank 2 Sensor 2 located on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine opposite Cylinder 1, and Sensor 2 is the downstream oxygen sensor located after the catalytic converter on that side.

How much does it cost to fix a P2272 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

The cost varies but typically ranges from $150 to $300 for oxygen sensor replacement, depending on parts and labor rates.

Can a bad catalytic converter cause a P2272 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Yes, a failing catalytic converter can affect the downstream oxygen sensor readings and potentially trigger the P2272 code.

What tools are needed to fix the P2272 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

You’ll need an OBD-II scanner, a digital multimeter, and possibly an oxygen sensor socket and basic hand tools for sensor replacement or wiring repairs.
