Code P2272 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content of the exhaust stream. When the engine is started, the Engine Control Module (ECM) operates in an Open Loop mode, ignoring the HO2S signal voltage while calculating the air-to-fuel ratio. While the engine runs, the HO2S heats up and begins to generate a voltage within a range of 0 - 1, 000 mV. Once sufficient HO2S voltage fluctuation is observed by the ECM, Closed Loop is entered. The ECM uses the HO2S voltage to determine the air-to-fuel ratio. An HO2S voltage that increases toward 1, 000 mV indicates a rich fuel mixture. An HO2S voltage that decreases toward 0 mV indicates a lean fuel mixture.
The heating elements inside each HO2S heat the sensor to bring the sensor up to operating conditions faster. This allows the system to enter Closed Loop earlier and the ECM to calculate the air-to-fuel ratio sooner.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM does not detect an HO2S voltage greater than 800 mV before accumulated mass airflow exceeds a calibrated value.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2272 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Code

What does code P2272 mean on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Code P2272 indicates that the downstream oxygen sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 2) is stuck in a lean signal state, which means it’s reporting low oxygen levels in the exhaust constantly.

What are the symptoms of code P2272 in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms may include the check engine light turning on, decreased fuel efficiency, rough idling, and possibly increased emissions.

What causes code P2272 to appear?

Common causes include a faulty downstream oxygen sensor, exhaust leaks, wiring issues, or a malfunctioning catalytic converter.

Can a bad oxygen sensor cause code P2272?

Yes, a failing downstream oxygen sensor on Bank 2 (Sensor 2) is one of the most common causes of this code.

How do I diagnose code P2272 on my Chevrolet Silverado?

Start by inspecting the oxygen sensor and its wiring for damage, check for exhaust leaks, and use a scan tool to monitor sensor readings for abnormal behavior.

Can I drive my 2016 Silverado with code P2272?

While you can drive the vehicle with this code, it’s not recommended as it may lead to reduced fuel efficiency, poor performance, or damage to other components like the catalytic converter.

How do I fix code P2272 on a Chevrolet Silverado?

Repairs may include replacing the downstream oxygen sensor, fixing exhaust leaks, repairing damaged wiring, or replacing the catalytic converter if necessary.

How much does it cost to repair code P2272?

Replacing the oxygen sensor can cost $150–$300, while repairing exhaust leaks or other components may vary depending on labor and parts.

Can an exhaust leak cause code P2272?

Yes, an exhaust leak near the downstream oxygen sensor can cause incorrect readings, leading to the P2272 code.

How do I reset code P2272 on my Silverado after repairs?

Use an OBDII scan tool to clear the code, or disconnect the battery for 10–15 minutes to reset the system, but ensure the underlying issue is fixed first.
