The Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) is controlled electronically by the Powertrain Turbo Actuator. This Electronic Turbo Actuator is an intelligent device that gathers data through the CAN BUS from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). It conducts its own diagnostic checks and communicates any failures back to the PCM via the CAN BUS. Upon receiving an error message, the PCM interprets it and translates it into a fault code. If a diagnostic test fails, the PCM will instantly illuminate the MIL lamp. Conversely, the MIL lamp will be deactivated by the PCM once the diagnostic test successfully passes during four successive drive cycles. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the commanded position and the actual position do not match over a calibrated time.
