AutoCodesChevrolet – P221E Chevrolet

P221E Chevrolet Code - Reductant Heater 3 Current Too Low

Quick Answer

The Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) system reduces Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions by injecting a metered amount of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or reductant into the exhaust gas stream entering the SCR catalyst. Common causes include Faulty Reductant Heater 3, Reductant Heater 3 harness is open or shorted, Reductant Heater 3 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P221E Chevrolet Description

The Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) system reduces Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions by injecting a metered amount of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or reductant into the exhaust gas stream entering the SCR catalyst. Within the SCR catalyst, the reductant reacts with the NOx to form nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Upstream and downstream NOx sensors provide the Engine Control Module (ECM) with engine-out and tailpipe-out NOx levels in Parts Per Million (ppm). The ECM then adjusts the amount of reductant injected upstream of the SCR based on the NOx concentration. Engine-out NOx levels as measured by NOx Sensor 1 will either increase (high ppm) or decrease (low ppm) the amount of reductant injected. The NOx concentration as measured by NOx Sensor 2 provides the ECM with both an indication of the NOx conversion efficiency within the SCR as well as confirming the proper operation of the reductant system. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Glow Plug Control Module (GPCM) detects a heater open circuit by detecting a low current in the heater.

Frequently Asked Questions about P221E Chevrolet Code

1. What does the OBDII code P221E mean for a Chevrolet?

P221E indicates that the Reductant Heater 3, part of the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system, is experiencing a current that is too low, often due to a fault in the heater circuit.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P221E code on a Chevrolet?

Symptoms include the check engine light turning on, possible DEF system warnings, difficulty meeting emissions standards, and reduced engine performance in some cases.

3. What causes the P221E code to appear on a Chevrolet?

Possible causes include a faulty reductant heater, damaged wiring or connectors in the heater circuit, a blown fuse, or a malfunctioning DEF control module.

4. How can I diagnose the P221E code on my Chevrolet?

Start by scanning the vehicle with an OBDII scanner, inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion, and testing the reductant heater circuit for proper voltage and resistance.

5. Can I drive my Chevrolet with the P221E code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, it’s not recommended to ignore this code as it can lead to emissions system failure and reduced performance over time.

6. How do I fix the P221E code on a Chevrolet?

Repairs typically involve replacing the reductant heater, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or replacing the DEF module if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P221E code on a Chevrolet?

Repair costs can range from $200 to $800 or more, depending on whether the issue is with the heater itself, wiring, or the DEF module.

8. Can a bad reductant heater damage other parts of my Chevrolet?

Yes, a faulty reductant heater can affect the DEF system's ability to function properly, leading to potential issues with emissions components such as the catalytic converter.

9. Does the P221E code affect emissions testing?

Yes, a P221E code can cause your vehicle to fail emissions tests due to improper DEF operation and increased NOx emissions.

10. How can I prevent the P221E code from recurring on my Chevrolet?

Regularly inspect and maintain the DEF system, including the wiring and connectors, and ensure the DEF fluid is of high quality and not contaminated.
