P2140 Dodge Code - Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch 'E'/'F' Voltage Correlation

Quick Answer

The Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor is an input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and used to determine the amount of torque requested by the operator. Common causes include Faulty Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor, Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor harness is open or shorted, Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P2140 Dodge Description

The Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor is an input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and used to determine the amount of torque requested by the operator. There are 2 pedal position signals in the sensor. Both signals, APP and APP2, have a positive slope (increasing angle, increasing voltage), but are offset and increase at different rates. The 2 pedal position signals make sure the PCM receives a correct input even if 1 signal has a concern. The PCM determines if a signal is incorrect by calculating where it should be, inferred from the other signals. If a concern is present with one of the circuits the other input is used. There are 2 reference voltage circuits, 2 signal return circuits, and 2 signal circuits (a total of 6 circuits and pins) between the PCM and the APP sensor assembly. The pedal position signal is converted to pedal travel degrees (rotary angle) by the PCM. The software converts these degrees to counts, which is the input to the torque based strategy. If the APP sensor inputs APP1 and APP2 disagree on the position of the accelerator pedal by more than an expected value, the P2138 is set.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2140 Dodge Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2140 mean on a Dodge vehicle?

P2140 indicates a voltage correlation issue between the Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor 'E' and 'F', meaning the sensor signals do not match as expected.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P2140 code in a Dodge?

Symptoms may include reduced engine performance, limp mode activation, erratic throttle response, or the check engine light turning on.

3. What causes the P2140 code to appear in a Dodge?

Possible causes include a faulty throttle or pedal position sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, or issues with the vehicle's Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

4. Can I drive my Dodge with the P2140 code?

Driving with the P2140 code may be possible but not recommended, as it could lead to reduced performance and potentially unsafe driving conditions.

5. How do I diagnose the P2140 code on my Dodge?

Diagnosis involves using an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, inspecting the throttle and pedal position sensors, checking for damaged wiring, and testing electrical connections.

6. How do I fix the P2140 code on a Dodge vehicle?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty throttle or pedal position sensor, repairing damaged wiring, cleaning electrical connections, or reprogramming the PCM if needed.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P2140 code in a Dodge?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $100 to $400 depending on whether the sensor, wiring, or PCM requires attention.

8. Can a dirty throttle body cause the P2140 code?

A dirty throttle body is not a direct cause of P2140 but can contribute to throttle-related issues that should be checked during diagnosis.

9. Will resetting the PCM fix the P2140 code in my Dodge?

Resetting the PCM may temporarily clear the code, but the underlying issue must be resolved to prevent the code from returning.

10. What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P2140 code in a Dodge?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for electrical tests, and potentially a throttle body cleaner if cleaning is necessary during diagnosis.
